I am currently working ...Thanks Keith for you blog! I am currently working towards my Masters and certification for secondary education (chemistry and math) and only recently have been introduced to the idea of badging. I was more than skeptical when a presenter in my Ed Tech class brought this to my attention. How does a digital sticker engage students? What merit/value do they have outside of my classroom? However, reading your blog helped to fill in some of those gaps for me. You state, that "students WANT specific goals in class to push them to try harder. It gives students direction instead of just telling them to "go learn on your own and report back to me". " This makes total sense to me! While I'm not a regular gamer, the thrill of accomplishing a task that I've decided is worthwhile, such as finding the fake advertisement in the local newspaper, is enough to hook me in for extended periods of time. The product at the end? Well, I can say that I found it, that I enjoyed the hunt and even enjoy telling others the twists and turns of the process!

Badging seems like a simple way to give students choice and motivation for engagement with little cost. Thanks too for posting the video from ITM and the link to Classbadges! I will definitely investigate this tech tool further and try it out in my own classroom.Laura Pressprichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18039411684560509957noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381504668745880798.post-76299270807584773172013-08-19T20:00:02.008-05:002013-08-19T20:00:02.008-05:00A great idea which may find an application in AP p...A great idea which may find an application in AP physics for students to complete all homework and challenge problems.goznikarhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00833885683930445280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381504668745880798.post-68682586390807220102013-08-19T08:24:44.325-05:002013-08-19T08:24:44.325-05:00Here is Apple's KB page on how to create Apple...Here is Apple's KB page on how to create Apple IDs without using a credit card http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2534Keith Sorensen, Blackbird of EdTech and eSportshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17138238938345891715noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381504668745880798.post-18022773671502531492013-08-19T07:02:18.131-05:002013-08-19T07:02:18.131-05:00Thanks, Keith. We give out tickets at my high school that can be redeemed for stuff, but I wonder if badges would be cheaper (most of the rewards cost the school something) and perhaps even more "meaningful" because peers will know WHY a student got that badge instead of the generic tickets we hand out.Chuck Bakerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15257969364128941719noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381504668745880798.post-77594521649918134502013-04-24T14:33:19.997-05:002013-04-24T14:33:19.997-05:00Thanks for the post, Keith!

I am not trained as a programmer, and the last time I programmed for fun was in 1987 on an Apple IIe, so I'm a little rusty. I have found the following:

1. 75-minute iTunes U videos (courtesy of Stanford University) are a great way to get a big picture, but are absolutely horrid for explaining detail.
2. 5-minute YouTube videos are better for detail, just as long as they present a single idea that you can go try.
3. Classic textbooks (I have about six checked out from the library) are great because you can flip backward and forward through the pages to see how the examples relate to the rest of the text.
4. Online text (www.stackoverflow.com, www.github.com) is great for very short examples, just as long as you can see everything you need on the same screen at a decent size. The second you have to scroll, you lose context and train of thought.
5. ePub-formatted versions of classic textbooks on the iPad are AWFUL. You can't see enough onscreen at once. You totally lose context. I gave up on them after about 5 minutes.
6. Powerpoint slides on the iPad (courtesy Stanford University iTunes U course) are better than ePub format, but you are still limited.

I have found the following combination of steps works best for me:
1. Watch the long iTunes U video to get the big picture and to get used to the sound and context of the basic vocabulary ("classes", "objects", "methods", "protocols", "delegates", etc.). Also, animations are very informative!
2. Read the traditional textbook to learn more detail.
3. Try to build a sample in the traditional text, then try to create my own.
4. When I hit a snag, or need more information, lookup help online in text form (github, google, or stackoverflow) or on YouTube.
5. Repeat the above process, bouncing back and forth between resources.

This process has allowed me to learn without a teacher, but I'm motivated and willing to try new stuff. It would need lots of streamlining to work for a student.Chris Brucehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14421516782033219092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6381504668745880798.post-52985480328579230822012-03-06T10:23:20.205-06:002012-03-06T10:23:20.205-06:00There are several other options out there for mobi...There are several other options out there for mobile interactive whiteboards that are cheaper (~$10).
